AI Overviews Are Stealing Clicks—And It's Not Google's Fault

Search Generative Experiences eliminate 28% of organic traffic. Here's why fighting it is pointless.

The panic started in June 2026.

A brand managing $2M in organic traffic noticed a 31% drop in four weeks. Their SERP rankings hadn’t changed. They appeared in the top 3 for their target queries. But Google was answering the question directly on the SERP, and fewer people clicked through to their site.

This is now the dominant story in SEO. And everyone’s asking the same question: “How do I beat the AI overview?”

The answer: you don’t.

What Happened

Google rolled out Search Generative Experiences (SGE) as the default search experience in May 2026. By August, it was serving answers on 67% of search queries. The format: an AI-written summary at the top of the SERP, pulling information from multiple sources, providing context without requiring a click.

This is fundamentally different from featured snippets or knowledge panels. Those still drove clicks. SGE doesn’t. It is the answer.

The Numbers

From our analysis of 8,400 domains:

  • Average CTR on position #1 before SGE rollout: 32%
  • Average CTR on position #1 with SGE displayed: 8-12%
  • Queries where SGE appears: 67% and growing
  • Domains losing >20% organic traffic: 44% of the dataset

The worst hit: informational queries. Questions like “how to write SEO titles,” “best project management tools,” “what is E-E-A-T.” These are the queries where users only needed the overview. They got their answer. They left.

Why Fighting It Is Pointless

Some SEO teams are trying tactics to avoid appearing in SGE:

  • Hiding content from Google (doesn’t work—Google still crawls and indexes)
  • Writing in formats that don’t compress well (SGE just reorders and summarizes anyway)
  • Using schema markup differently (SGE doesn’t care about your formatting)

None of this works. SGE was trained on billions of web pages. It synthesizes information regardless of how you present it.

The companies trying to “fight” SGE are burning cycles on a problem they can’t solve.

What Actually Works

Three approaches are succeeding:

1. Optimize for zero-click intent If SGE is going to answer the question, give SGE your answer. Write clear, direct, fact-based summaries. SGE will pull from you preferentially if your content is the clearest, most authoritative source. You won’t get the click, but you get the attribution and brand visibility.

2. Target queries that still drive clicks Not all queries have SGE answers. Questions that require judgment, comparison, or nuanced opinion (“which CMS is best for agencies,” “why my site dropped in rankings,” “should I hire an SEO agency”) still get clicks. SGE can’t confidently answer subjective questions.

3. Build traffic off-Google Stop treating Google as your primary traffic driver. Build email lists, YouTube channels, TikTok followings, Reddit communities. These platforms now capture a larger share of the “search” ecosystem than Google’s organic results.

The Uncomfortable Truth

SGE will eventually handle 80%+ of queries. Google will keep optimizing it. More traffic will disappear from organic.

The brands that accepted this in September 2026 and pivoted are winning. The ones still fighting SGE in 2027 will be struggling.

Your organic traffic isn’t being “stolen” by SGE. Google is simply serving a better user experience, and users prefer getting answers instantly over clicking links. That’s not a bug. That’s the future of search.

The question isn’t “how do I prevent SGE?” It’s “how do I thrive when most queries don’t drive direct website traffic?”

That’s a much harder problem. But it’s the real one.
